How to discern the different between testing and result of sin
This is a very important spiritual question, because not every hardship is a trial from God, and not every hardship is a result of sin. The Bible gives clear principles to discern the difference.
Key Difference
| Testing from God | Consequences of Sin |
|---|---|
| God allows it to strengthen, refine, and mature you | Your own actions caused the hardship |
| Produces growth, wisdom, humility, and deeper faith | Produces guilt, shame, confusion, and regret |
| Draws you closer to God | Pushes you away from God |
| Inner peace even in pain | Inner restlessness and disturbance |
| Leads to greater spiritual authority | Leads to correction and repentance |
1) Examine the Source
Ask: Did I choose something outside of God’s will?
- If a person sins (lying, sexual sin, unforgiveness, pride, rebellion) and consequences come →
That is not a trial; it is reaping what was sown.
Galatians 6:7
Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap.
But when you are walking obediently, and hardship comes without sin, this is likely a trial.
2) Examine the Fruit (The Outcome)
- Testing → produces faith, patience, character (James 1:2–4)
- Sin consequences → produce brokenness, regret, division, disorder
James 3:17
The wisdom that comes from God is peaceable.
If the situation is producing clarity, peace, growth, that is testing.
If it is producing confusion, chaos, pain caused by disobedience, that is the result of sin.
3) Examine Your Relationship with God in the Struggle
Ask yourself:
- Am I being pulled toward God or away from Him?
| If you feel drawn to pray more, read the Word more → That’s God refining. |
| If you feel guilt, hiding, avoiding God → That’s conviction from sin. |
Trials pull you to God.
Sin pulls you away from God.
4) Check the Holy Spirit’s Witness
The Holy Spirit convicts sin, but comforts during trials.
| Conviction | Comfort |
|---|---|
| Clear awareness of wrong | Deep inner peace despite suffering |
| Calls you to repent | Calls you to trust |
Romans 8:16
The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit.
Your inner witness will tell you the truth.
5) Look at the Pattern
- If the difficulty is repetitive, following the same behavior → consequences of sin.
- If the difficulty grows your strength and capacity, elevating you to new levels → testing from God.
God tests before promotion.
Sin tries to block promotion.
Simple Diagnostic Question
Ask yourself this:
“Did I open the door to this?”
If yes → Repent, close the door, receive forgiveness, walk new.
If no → Stand firm, endure the test, God is training and elevating you.
Biblical Examples
| Person | Was it Testing or Sin? | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Testing | He was righteous; God refined and rewarded him |
| David (with Bathsheba) | Result of sin | His suffering came from his own choices |
| Joseph | Testing | Trials were preparation for promotion |
| Samson | Result of sin | His downfall came from disobedience |
How to Respond
If testing → Don’t run. Endure. Worship. Stay faithful.
If sin → Don’t hide. Repent. Receive mercy. Change direction.
God does not test to destroy.
Sin destroys when we refuse to repent.
